I do not encourage employer to give $$ in lieu of air ticket. This would encourage them to resign and perform badly looking for termination. For some of the helpers whose home is far from Manila / Jakarta, they are very happy to take $2000+.
In addition, as mentioned above, if they finally do not have money to buy the ticket, they will go back to you.
Besides, the original purpose is to make sure they have ticket to go back home upon completion of contract, not for them to make $$.
Don't trust the agent. Many of them are ... encouraging helpers to change job in order to earn commission. They tempt the helpers to resign for higher pay (from $3580 to $3740) and ticket encashment which is $1000+. I reckon there is no shortage in the market but the game of musical chair.
You can ask the agent for quote, pretending you are going to give $$ but buy the ticket from travel agent. You are not obliged to do the helper a favour as she didn't help you at all.
1) Do I need to confirm the destination (home country in Philippines - is there only air ticket required to Manila and nowhere else) and date of departure with the maid some days before her last day? How to decide the departure date? Last day + ?? days?
2) If yes to (1), and if the maid ask for $ in lieu of ticket and I reject or hesitate, I'm afraid she will do sth bad to my family. Should I keep silent not discussing this with her until the last day I show her the ticket? What if she refuses to accept and acknowledge?
3) Am I only required to buy a ticket on a fixed day (not allowed to change even with additional payment) or one allowing changes within 14 days?
My yanyan came in end-September. In end-October, she resigned. The last day of service is 30 Nov. I also want to buy a ticket using visa so that she cannot get the refund. How can I buy the Cathay ticket by visa? I want to buy a ticket to Jakarta with departure date on 13 Dec. Grateful for advice.
I also did the same to my last yanyan who resigned. She wanted cash. I said I shall decide later. On the last day, I gave her the ticket and asked her to sign. She could not say anything, and accepted it.

I have the same problem. The concern is:
1) Do I need to confirm the destination (home country in ...
I used my travel agent. I stated in the termination letter that she has to go to the agent to fix the date and get the air ticket within 10 days from the termination effective date (she is allowed to stay 14 days).
She asked the agent to refund and I rejected as I do not want her (the helpers) to make money on this and wanted to make sure she can go home. I gave her one month $$ already. Otherwise, she made more than $5k bonus for not performing.
Existing rules do not state this. We may buy one which can change only once, not refund.
Heard that Cathay provides refund service to employer, not helper.
